Circle of Praise Dance Concert

Audra's dance concert for the year was tonight. It was so beautiful and precious.

Audra's dance teachers: Miss Julie and Miss Heather.
The little girls spinning with excitement as they wait for the show to begin. They love these dresses. I love that they are pretty and still modest.
Scott and Titus brought Audra flowers that Titus picked out. I think this was actually the highlight of the concert for Audra. She kept saying over and over again, "Thank you so much for my flowers. That was so kind of you!"

To every person she saw, she would say, "Look at my beautiful flowers! My Daddy and brother gave them to me!"
She carried them everywhere with her that night and the next morning when we were packing the minivan for Florida she said, "Mommy, can I please take my flowers to the beach? They would like to rest on the nice sand." How could I resist? We carried those flowers 15 hours all the way to Carillon Beach, Florida.

Read the letter below from Audra's teachers (on the back of the program) and you'll see why I love this ministry so much. I wish there had been something like this around when I was growing up.

Dear Parents,

We are blessed beyond measure to be able to teach your girls the art of dance and are thankful that God gave us this art to worship Him. Thank you for allowing us to teach your girls that dance used in the proper way is all about praising the Lord. We were made to worship Him and dance is just one of the ways we can worship Him! We are grateful that God has brought the art of dance back to the church where it belongs. And we are grateful that you have allowed us to teach our girls the art of dance as a form of worshiping the One who created us. Your girls are special to us and we are grateful that you allow us to spend time with them each week.

Thank you!

Isn't this card adorable? We found it on the front door step the day after Titus arrived home from the hospital. Avery Neufeld made it for Titus. Sara, his mom, said that Avery was so excited to draw a picture of Darth Vadar on the back because the two of them play "Star Wars" together at Kids' Day Out each week.

This card is an example of the MANY kind and generous things people have done for us while we were in the hospital. I am so thankful to live in this community and have such caring friends. God has provided for me once again. Thank you to the MANY of you who called, sent emails, prayed for us, and offered to help (my friends, but also Helen, Daniel & Audra, and Kelly from Recruiting Edge, who work with Scott and knew he was out of town). Thank you to Jill Bell, Kristin Gray, and Jim Hall (our pastor) for coming to visit us in the hospital. Jill has obviously had children in the hospital because she knew exactly what to bring that I would have never known I needed: toys & books for Titus, magazines for me, snacks that Titus would actually eat (unlike the hospital food), and a yummy breakfast smoothie (also unlike the hospital food). Kristin also brought a bag full of snacks and toys picked out by her boys and delicious homemade cookies. Thank you so much to Cari Harris and Myra Graves for taking Audra for the morning to give my mom a break. (I am so sad that Cari is moving to St. Louis at the end of the month. She has been such a good friend and so selfless in offering to help watch my kids over the past two years.) Thank you to Kim Petrone and Krista Roy for bringing dinner to us...and to the many others who offered. Thankfully, we are leaving for Florida on Saturday and won't need them. I feel so "taken care of" and "provided for". God's lavish love is evident through your lives.

Titus is Home!

Hooray! Titus got to come home from the hospital a day early!!! In hindsight, I'm actually so thankful for the sweet time of undivided attention that I had with Titus in the hospital. We were there together for 5 days and I had no dishes to wash, laundry to do, or emails to answer. (Or at least, they were at home and not at the hospital with me.) Titus and I read books, snuggled, talked, watched movies, and searched for Waldo together (Thanks for the "Where's Waldo?" book, Jill.)

On the drive home (completely unsolicited and "out of the blue") Titus said, "Mommy, you did a great job taking care of me in the hospital." It makes me tear up thinking about it even now. I remember my first weeks of being a stay-at-home mom with Titus as a newborn. It was a challenge for me then to work so hard without the praise or accolades in return that I had received in school or at work. I remember talking about this to a friend and telling her, "My baby is just never going to tell me, 'You're doing such a good job changing my diaper. Thank you.'" I had to become content knowing that is part of being a mother and that the fulfillment and rewards are different. Still, it was so precious to me to hear my son say, "Thank you, Mommy. Good job." It also felt like God whispering to me, "You are doing a good job. Don't grow weary. Keep going. You can do it." It meant the world to me.
Here's the painting that Mimi helped Audra make as a "welcome home" present for Titus.
Titus and Audra taking turns being the doctor and the patient with the incentive spirometer. Titus has to do his breathing excercises into this every two hours and I have to "pound" on his back four times a day for the next 10 days.

Visitors at the Hospital

Audra's dance concert is Friday night. Dad came to stay with Titus at the hospital for a couple of hours this evening, so I could take Audra to her rehearsal. Afterwards, I took Mimi, Audra, and Justus by the hospital to see Titus. They hadn't seen him since Saturday afternoon and I hoped it would help Audra visualize where Titus and I have been and also be good medicine for Titus. It did the trick!

Making crazy faces! This is the best I've seen Titus in 5 days. He is finally able to sit up on his own and he actually PLAYED tonight when he saw Audra and Justus.
The respiratory therapist came in while we were all there and let Audra "help" Titus do his breathing exercises on the incentive spirometer.
Sweet brothers!

Hospital Pictures

My sweet friend, Jill, visited us in the hospital and took these pictures of Titus.

A Trip to the ER

This is a very quick email to let you know that last night I took Titus to an Urgent Care Clinic with what I thought was the stomach flu. The doctor thought it was stomach flu but was uncertain, so he sent us to the ER at Washington Regional. I opted to go to the hospital in Springdale, because a good friend's husband is one of the ER doctors there. To make a long story short, he was the third doctor to see Titus that day and the only one that didn't think it was the stomach flu and warned me that he was "very concerned." (He listed several options including a ruptured appendix.) He ran several tests and Titus has an "impressive" case of Pneumonia (as he called it). Titus was hospitalized later that night and will probably be in the hospital until Wednesday. He is on oxygen and has fluid and antibiotic IVs.

I am SO, SO thankful for my sweet friend's husband. He is such a good doctor and was so kind and gentle with Titus. I highly recommend Dr. Chris Murphy if you ever have an emergency. Scott is in Washington on a business trip and I am so thankful that my parents were in town and were able to extend their stay. I'm home only for a few moments to shower and pack a bag. Dad is at the hospital with Titus while I'm home and Mom is here at the house with the kids. I am so thankful, once again, for my wonderful parents. I'm also so thankful for my loving husband who has been so concerned for Titus and emotional about being so far away.

Please, pray for all of us. I'm heading back to the hospital. More later.

Mimi & Gramps are Here

THURSDAY Scott has been travelling a lot since January solidifying relationships with his current clients and adding new ones. This week, he's spending two days with a new company in Seattle then five more days visiting his family in Washington. He called Mimi and Gramps to see if they would come spend a couple days with us to help me out. I'm thrilled they are here! And they came bearing gifts of flowers for the kids to plant in containers.
FRIDAY Gramps reading to Audra. Titus has been in bed for the past two days with the stomach flu. Actually he's rotated from his bed, to the couch, to my bed, and back again. He spiked a high fever during the night on Wednesday and threw up all morning yesterday. He hasn't been able to eat for two days and is so weak. I'm so thankful that Mimi and Gramps have been here to help! My sweet Dad has watched the kids for several hours each day, so Mom and I could go run errands and even shop for swimsuits for Florida next week.
SATURDAY Mimi and Audra taking Justus and "Shelby" for a walk. Mom was trying to keep Audra and Justus occupied, so Dad and I could clean out the garage. When Mom, Dad, and I get together we tend to work, work, and work some more. None of us have that sit still gene and we love working together to tackle hard projects. We filed all my papers, cleaned out Scott's office, and cleaned out the garage. It is such a great feeling to have it done and I'm always thankful to have their company and insight while I do hard jobs. (Do I have the best parents, or what?!?!)

Also, it has been 48 hours and Titus doesn't seem to be feeling much better. I'm beginning to question whether or not this is the stomach flu and if I should take him to the doctor.

Spring!

This morning was the last day of Bible Study for the year and I am always sad when it ends. I go through withdrawals during the summer and can definitely tell a difference in my perspective on life about half-way through the summer. It is good for me to stay connected to the Truth of God's Word, rather than the distracted wanderings of my emotions and wants. I also dearly love the other girls in my small group. (I don't know why I resist the term "women" or "ladies" and use the word "girls". We're all in our 30's.) They have become some of my closest friends and definitely my support system. This Beth Moore study of the book of Daniel has also been one of my favorites.

To celebrate our last study, the children led our worship time (see picture above). It was precious. I'm not exactly sure how it started, but my children have a tradition of giving me the "I Love You" ASL sign whenever they are on stage. It is precious to me. Also, the little boy to the right of Audra is the grandson of my mom's lifelong friend, Imelda. Our families share decades of history. I love being home.

Afterwards, I was drinking in Spring and decided to take the kids by one of my favorite little spots in Fayetteville. It is the garden next to Gift House Antiques (the store is equally beautiful, but I wouldn't dare let my kids loose in there!) I encouraged the kids to run around and enjoy all the gorgeous colors, smells, and textures of this garden. I'd be happy spending every warm day like this. I wish my garden looked like this...but until "someday" I'll be content enjoying theirs.

A New Friend

Audra's new favorite thing to do is meeting new people. The warm weather is working in her favor because there is usually a neighbor outside when we are. Her favorite new friend is Jordan. He's lived across the street for over 2 years, but she has just discovered him. He graduated from Har-Ber High School last year and works at the neighborhood grocery store in the mornings. He is often home in the afternoon and evening and likes to listen to music out on his swing. Audra loves to sit on his swing with him and chat while I work in the front flower beds. Jordan has Downs Syndrome and is very patient with her. He mainly just listens and answers her questions, which works out great for Audra. When he gets tired of it, he just goes back inside and she bops back home. Every time she notices him out on his swing, she begs to go outside and talk to him.
Here is the Dogwood tree in Jordan's yard. Dogwoods are one of my favorite trees. I've loved them since I was a little girl. It's probably because my mom loves them and would always point them out to me. They grow wild all over Northwest Arkansas. I have found myself saying over and over to the kids this week as we drive, "Look at the Dogwoods! See the beautiful trees with the white blooms?" I'm becoming my mother.
A couple days later I discovered this hot pink Dogwood in a neighbor's yard. Isn't it gorgeous? I don't think I've ever seen one before. There is something about Spring that awakens my hibernating senses. I just love it!

Happy Birthday Wyatt!

DJ and Cari Harris invited us to Wyatt's 4th birthday party and the new Arvest Field for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. (Thank you for inviting us!) We had crazy Spring weather that day and it was about 40 degrees, so we didn't stay as long as we would have liked, but it was still a lot of fun! When we walked through the gates, they invited Titus, Audra, and some of the other kids to play games with the mascot out on the field before the game!
Audra and the mascot, Strike.
They also had inflatables for the kids before the game started. Here is Titus doing his "look back" to check the bases before he pitches. Can you tell his Daddy was a pitcher?
And the pitch! "Steeeeerike!"

New Heights Women's Retreat

The New Heights Womens' Retreat was such a blessing to me. I'm so thankful that Scott was willing to watch the kids so I could go. I drove up there with my friend, Qiana, and it was so nice to have time to catch up. We stayed in cabins in Ponca, AR near the Buffalo River. The picture above is the view from the main lodge. It was so quiet and peaceful. I wish I had taken more picturs.

The part of the weekend that I enjoyed the most was sitting and visiting with mothers who are older than I am and listening to their wisdom on marriage and parenting. It was like opening a treasure chest of wealth that I didn't know I'd had available to me all along. I loved getting to know these ladies and we laughed late into the night. Our small group time was incredible. We saw God answer some seemingly impossible prayer requests and one woman was set free from unforgiveness towards her ex-husband that had been holding her in bondage for decades. I felt honored to be there. Another HUGE blessing was having three meals a day cooked, served, and cleaned up for me. I told the ladies responsible for this part of the weekend over and over again. I felt so spoiled.

I prayed for Scott and the kids numerous times throught the weekend. I really hoped it was going well. When I called Scott to check in on Saturday night they were all having a great time! They'd been eating Lucky Charms, pizza, and watching Star Wars in their pj's all day. Scott told me that his only rule for the weekend was "there are no rules"! He said the kids had been telling him all day, "You're the best Dad in the whole world!" He was loving every minute of it! It reminded me of that Bill Cosby skit where the mom goes out of town and he feeds the kids chocolate cake for breakfast. Then they break out in a resounding "Dad is great! Give us some chocolate cake!"

Say A Little Prayer for Scott

I'm leaving town in an hour for a weekend-long women's retreat for my church. It is the first time Scott has ever kept all three kids overnight by himself. It will be good for me to get to know more ladies from our church and good bonding time for Scott and the kids. Titus has been trying to kick me out all day because Scott told him they could play video games and baseball in the backyard when I leave. He keeps asking me, "Mommy, what time are you leaving?"

Scott is at the grocery store stocking up for the weekend. He just called me to inform me that they are eating junk food for 48 hours! He also said that I don't need to lay clothes out, because they can just wear their pj's for two days. I don't think he wants to attempt leaving the house with all three of them by himself. I'm a little scared! This should be hilarious! They will all have a great time, I'm sure! I have a feeling it's going to be a video game and movie marathon...for all of them.

20 minutes later...Scott just arrived home with 5 bags full of groceries including Lucky Charms for breakfast! My kids have never eaten Lucky Charms! They are going to rise a coup up against me after this weekend! I have to give him a little credit, though. He did buy brats, steak, strawberries, and grapes. Better run. I think I'll go eat some Lucky Charms before I leave.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals Opening Game

We have a new semi-pro baseball team in Northwest Arkansas. Their field is about 3 miles from our house. We got tickets to take the kids to the Opening Game. Despite the traffic, lack of parking spaces, the 1.5 hour wait to stand in line for hot dogs, and the sopping wet grass (and sopping wet bottoms), it was exciting to be at the very first game.

Our tickets were for general admission out on the lawn. I highly recommend this if you have little ones. It was perfect for Justus. He loved being able to walk around our blanket area.
Scott took Titus and Audra to get hot dogs. An hour later, Justus and I were still hanging out wondering what happened to them. We had lots of bonding time. Scott said Audra entertained everyone in line...and then came back and made friends with all the people sitting around us.

Kindergarten Testing

Titus had his testing this morning for kindergarten at Providence Academy next year. When Ms. Bowen called to set up his appointment, she said that it would not be a big deal, "just letters, numbers, colors, and things like that." I spent several days this past week reviewing these with him, just so he wouldn't go in there and forget the name of a triangle or something. We also continued working on his reading, in case she asked him to read. (I'm so proud of him for how well he is doing in this area and really enjoy the time we spend reading together. It is nearly as difficult as I imagined it would be. It actually seems to be coming pretty naturally to him. It certainly isn't because I'm an expert at teaching reading. I do recommend the Hooked On Phonics program, though. It seems to make things simple. The Leapfrog "Talking Words Factory" video is really helpful for phonics, too.)

I thought we'd work on writing a little, because that is where he has the least practice. He's just never been interested in it. He's never even liked to color. As a toddler, when I gave him crayons he would either eat them or launch them across the kitchen from his high chair. Even now, I typically receive blank coloring pages from his teachers at Bible Study or Kids' Day Out. Here are some pictures of my attempt at fun writing activities earlier this week:
Audra loves her spiral notebook and writes on her pages over and over again. I got this idea from my friend, Sara Neufeld, a couple weeks ago and it is such a hit.

The kids love to do these Kumon Tracing and Maze books. Titus definitely prefers these over writing or coloring. They are suppose to help with pencil-control skills and reasoning, which leads to writing numbers and letters. I've also noticed that Titus switches back and forth between his right and left hand. You can see this in the pictures above.

At any rate, this morning I took Titus to his testing at Providence. It lasted about 30 minutes and I was curious what they could have talked about for that long. While Justus and I waited in the lobby, I met the family that was testing after Titus. The mom's name was also Ashley and she had three little kids almost the exact ages of ours. When I asked her son his name, he answered, "Luke Skywalker Bear." I felt so relieved that someone else lets their 5-year-old son watch Star Wars. (This has been a source of inner turmoil for me because I thought Titus was too young, but I've deferred to Scott on this one.) I also felt comforted that he might be a good friend for Titus next year.

(This next part is so I'll have it recorded in our book. You blog readers will have to bear with me.) When Titus and Ms. Bowen came out of the room she told me that she would go over all of his results at the family interview in a few weeks. She did say "he did great" and that she doesn't have any concerns. She also mentioned that he "is ready for kindergarten." She laughed and said that she asked him how high he could count and he said, "About 40." Then he counted to over 100 and she finally stopped him! (That is mainly due to his interest in race cars this time last year. He kept asking me to read the numbers to him so I thought I should take advantage of his interest in it at the time. He learned them in two evenings.) I think numbers and math are probably his greatest strength academically so far.

Ms. Bowen also said that Titus was "delightful" and that she could have visited with him all afternoon. She told me that she asked him what his favorite thing is to do and he answered, "playing Lego Star Wars video game with my Dad." She laughed and said that she has two boys who love it, too. I daydreamed of having children that loved nature walks and building things out of rocks and sticks. Oh, well. I guess we haven't done as much of that as I daydreamed that we would.

On the way home, I could tell that Titus was processing everything about his day visiting his potential kindergarten: "I am so excited about kindergarten, Mommy." (pause) "I had so much fun in there. I hope I get to go back there someday." (pause) "Why are some 5-year-olds already in kindergarten?"

We chatted about the morning and I asked him what types of things she asked. He answered, "You got a smiley face for doing a great job. I got lots of smiley faces, but I didn't know how to spell 'rainbow' and I didn't know a word that rhymed with bunny."

I was thinking, "No kidding...and you knew the other answers?!?!" I'm really curious to find out what types of things she asked now. Sounds a little harder than colors and shapes. I was especially proud of him because when Ms. Bowen introduced herself to Titus she said, "Hi, Titus. How are you?"

He smiled and answered, "I'm fine. How are you?" (Then he looked at me and gave me a subtle "I did it" smile.) That may seem insignificant, but I've been working with him for weeks on answering people when they ask him a question. We've actually role-played this exact hypothetical conversation. In the car I told him how proud I was of him and he answered casually, "Yeah. I was just doing the 'right thing'."

Wow! Yes, you were. That is the first time I've ever heard him say that. We have talked so much about "doing the right thing" even when it is difficult or we don't want to do it. This precious morning was enough to fill my "weary from refereeing between Titus and Audra for arguing and being unkind to each other" tank for two weeks!

Banana Pops

This is my latest attempt at encouraging my children to eat a larger variety of foods. I thought this would be a fun reward if they eat what is served on their plate at dinner without arguing or complaining. I'll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, it was a fun project for the morning.
Here's our little assembly line. Audra peeled the bananas, Titus put the popsicle sticks in, ...and Justus helped eat some bananas.
Here are our frozen banana pops! These always remind me of going to Silver Dollar City with Stephanie (Hill) Drury's family as a kid. Yumm!

Happy Birthday Finley!

AJ and Sara Neufeld celebrated Finley's 3rd birthday at Wilson Park this morning. The morning started out cool, but it turned out to be a beautiful day! Thank you for inviting us!

Finley loving every taste of his 3rd birthday cupcake! (Titus salivating while he imagines how good it tastes.) Happy Birthday, Finley!
